Rhode Island has joined the rapidly growing number of states which have legalized marijuana possession and use. On May 25, 2022, the Governor of Rhode Island, Dan McKee signed into law the Rhode Island Cannabis Act. The Act is designed to legalize “common-sense” adult use of marijuana. In-store sales are expected to begin by the end of 2022. The Act provides for a taxation rate of 20% on sales under the Act which is divided between state and local governments. In keeping with many other states which have passed similar legislation, the Act provides for automatic expungement of most past cannabis convictions. Rhode Island’s legalization brings the total to nineteen states that have, to some degree, legalized cannabis for recreational use.
