We have provided counseling and services on inventions in a wide variety of fields, including automotive technologies, biotechnology components, business methods, computer software, control systems, environmental engineering devices, industrial tools, internet and email systems, healthcare related devices and methods, production processes and systems. Our attorneys work closely with our inventors and engineers to develop detailed invention records and seek the broadest patent protection permitted by law. We have expertise in preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications, and work closely with engineering management in the development and management of patent portfolios. Our attorneys also assist clients in the sale and purchase of patent assets and portfolios and in the formation and operation of intellectual property holding companies which help our clients maximize revenues from their creative output.

Our attorneys actively both initiate and defend against patent infringement actions across the United States. We have an extensive knowledge of the depths of patent law and the skills in both business and technology to actively protect our clients' patents and commercial interests.

TRADEMARKS

Trademark Registration, Counseling, and Transactions

Goodman Allen & Filetti's intellectual property attorneys counsel our clients regarding the risks and advantages in the adoption and use of trademarks and trade names. Among other services, our attorneys conduct and analyze trademark availability searches and file and prosecute trademark and servicemark applications. Once a client's trademark has been registered, Goodman Allen & Filetti provides continuing support for the client by counseling how to effectively use the trademark to protect business interests and goodwill, both of which are essential in building and maintaining a successful enterprise.

Goodman Allen & Filetti also assists clients with the purchase, sale, and/or transfer of trademarks, as well as in drafting and reviewing documents associated with such transactions, including licensing and assignment agreements.

Trademark Litigation

Goodman Allen & Filetti's focal point in trademark litigation is the protection of our clients' brand value developed through use of their trademarks. We provide a wide range of litigation services, acting both proactively, by pursuing actions against infringers, and reactively, by defending our clients against accusations of infringement and improper trademark, servicemark and trade name use.

We handle proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and we also represent clients with domain names and Internet disputes under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy of ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). We have litigated matters in both state and federal courts across Virginia, as well as numerous other states, including California, New York and Texas. Our services extend beyond national borders as well, as we have been involved in intellectual property disputes involving parties in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.

COPYRIGHTS

Goodman Allen & Filetti assists clients in obtaining federal copyright registrations. We provide continuing support for our clients by counseling how to effectively use copyrights. Goodman Allen & Filetti also assist clients with the purchase, sale, and/or transfer of copyrights, as well as in drafting and reviewing documents associated with such transactions, including licensing and assignment agreements. Goodman Allen & Filetti also provides copyright litigation services which serve to protect various clients' works of authorship and design.

TRADE SECRETS and UNFAIR COMPETITION

We counsel clients in drafting and implementing policies and procedures which will help them most effectively comply with applicable trade secret laws while adequately protecting proprietary and confidential business and commercial information. And, in cases where such measures are not sufficient, we pursue and defend actions related to the misappropriation and improper use of trade secrets by employees, former employees, and third parties.

Goodman Allen & Filetti also has extensive experience with unfair competition, business, conspiracy, and tortious interference litigation. In cases in which parties' business interests come into improper conflict and no intellectual property laws are applicable, we continue to pursue and defend actions under other applicable state and federal laws.

Goodman Allen & Filetti attorneys represent clients in disputes involving trade secrets, trade dress, and unfair competition.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

INTERNET AND COMPUTER LAW

In the current business environment, the Internet plays a major role in the dispersal of intellectual property, trademarks, and trade dress, and is a source of high-dollar commerce. Goodman, Allen & Filetti assist our clients with navigating among the myriad of laws and regulations that can and do apply to entities conducting business and e-commerce via the Internet. Our services include assistance with the legal aspects of website design and initial site posting, as well as audit services for currently existing websites in order to ensure that they comply with those laws and regulations.

We also protect clients' domain names and Internet presence through a variety of legal means, including use of the Anti-Cyber Squatting Protection Act and ICANN proceedings.
